As I suspected, it seems that your beef is not with atheism, but with physicalism. All atheism does is deny the existence of a super-natural god. It doesn’t entail that they also reject any kind of non-natural properties. An atheist can disbelieve in a god and still accept that there are objective, non-natural moral properties. This would mean that they accept ethical non-naturalism, however—not ethical naturalism. The bottom line here is that a person can be an atheist and not a physicalist and still accept moral objectivity.
But I agree with you. As an atheist and a physicalist, I have rejected ethical naturalism because of the queer nature of morals (which you have illustrated). But there are other atheists who are also physicalists who have accepted ethical naturalism (bear in mind too that a physicalist can also be a theist and they are just as guilty of the problems I see in moral naturalism). I think that they are wrong to do so, but the arguments run far deeper than I can really go into in this forum. Those physicalists who accept ethical naturalism have very good and well-thoughtout reasons for doing so which I should let them defend for themselves.
The whole point of this whole thing was that atheism is not related at all to moral theory. And I really hope that this is obvious by now.
Well, fair enough then. Least we can agree that we reject that theory…
