Republican “logic”
The depressing part is how accurate this is…
You frequently hear Republicans talking about how people have the choice to buy insurance (assuming they’re not covered by a group plan.) Sometimes young people don’t buy insurance because they’re young and they think they’re invincible. It’s an irresponsible decision, but Republicans emphasize that that’s each individual’s decision to make. This is the logic behind Ron Paul saying that an uninsured man in a coma should be allowed to die.
I do not currently have access to an employee group plan. I have a pre-existing condition which I’ve had since birth. When I tried to get insurance through BlueCrossBlueShield, they quoted me $2,000/month for a bare minimum policy. Mind you, treating my pre-existing condition costs around $120/month. And there’s almost no chance of my pre-existing condition landing me in the hospital or what-not. Doesn’t matter.
In a Republican’s mind, I would be irresponsible for opting not to purchase that insurance. However, it turns out that I’m lucky. The state that I live in has a socialist health plan for high risk individuals. I managed to qualify and that’s what I’m currently on. You know what? It’s works identically to all the private health insurance coverage that I had in the past. I love it. It costs me about $250/month, which is a lot less than $2,000/month.
