It’s a scenario and I really wish I remembered the thinker who I, more or less, quoted this from. Anyways, no, I agree. As long as we’ve held the capacity to, we’ve pondered our existence and our origin. I’m not debating that nor am I debating the concept of faith, what I’m trying to say is that if presented with a (if you’ll allow me to use an economic analogy) free “marketplace of ideas” without the monopolistic competition of Islam, Judaism, and Christianity, I doubt we’d place as much importance on religion as we do now.
Perhaps. I’m not sure that ‘we’ place that much importance on religion as it is. I think it seems that way to Americans(sorry for the assumption if you’re not), but outside of the curiously evangelical sects, most people are more likely moderate. Moderation doesn’t make for good television, though. I don’t know a whole lot about the politics of other countries, but from what I do, religion isn’t as prevalent a part of their process.
You can’t look the recent contraceptive battle between President Obama and the GOP and tell me that religion doesn’t have a big influence within our country. Look at the widespread personhood bills and stricter abortion laws and tell me there isn’t a Biblical foundation within it’s most basic argument.
That’s not what I said. Those are American problems, and I agree that in America, religion has a large impact in politics. But there is still the rest of the world and all the religions they embrace.
Is there a biblical foundation in abortion and personhood bills? The bible doesn’t address that issue directly, and indirectly, support is pretty weak and dependent on faulty reasoning. I mean, I’m sure conservatives believe there is, but it’s even less clear an issue than whether or not the bible rejects homosexuality. I’m honestly not sure what the underlying belief really is, whether it’s based on a view that Christianity is definitely against abortion or a cultural desire to return to the ‘ideal’ time of the 1950’s.
