Cooking tips

Why it’s better to cook rice in a microwavable rice cooker or a glass pan:

-Microwaves are more energy efficient than stovetop ranges

-Less chance of overcooking the rice

-Less chance of the rice sticking to the bottom in a glass pan

-Easier clean-up

In general, it’s better to choose appliances in this order for cooking: Microwave, stovetop, toaster oven(depending on the type), and oven. If you are using an oven, then use it for multiple things or large recipes if possible, and freeze the leftovers. Many oven recipes are equally delicious converted to microwave or toaster oven, and with 20-50% less guilt! Other good ideas include skipping unecessary steps in recipes that call for additional pots or pans, ie, combining things in one bowl(depends on the recipe), in order to save in dishwasher space.

Someday, I want to write a cookbook with energy-efficient and low-fat recipes. Number 1: Why the heck would anyone bake a full quiche for an hour and a half when you can make little ones that are just as tasty in a toaster oven for 20 minutes?! Plus you get pre-made individual servings!

I have a lot of energy guilt I’m trying to work off these days.
